BICYCLE SAFETY FOR NEW YORKERS [INFOGRAPHIC]

By: Ruben DavidoffApril 1, 2023,

With warmer weather quickly approaching comes an increase of bicycles sharing the road. New York City, with more than 1,456 miles of bicycle lanes as of 2021 and 530,000 daily bike trips recorded in 2019, is well-known for its perceived bikeability. However, as we know, more vehicles often means higher risk of collisions, and 5,621 collisions between bicycles and cars occurred in 2022.

As we get closer to the months where more cyclists are on the roads, it’s essential for them to know how to keep themselves safe. Here are some essential safety tips.

What Can Cyclists Do?

  • Follow the Law: Obey all traffic laws and signs, including stopping at red lights and stop signs. 89 percent of serious cycling injuries result from intersection crashes.
  • Wear a Helmet: Anyone aged 14 and younger who is the operator or passenger of a bicycle is required by law to wear a helmet.
  • Be Cautious When Passing: When passing trucks, buses, or other large vehicles, use extra caution. If you cannot see the driver they cannot see you.
  • Stay in Safe Areas: Use marked bike lanes or pathways whenever possible, and never ride on the sidewalk.
  • Increase Visibility: If not already included, add a white headlight and red tail light to your bicycle to increase visibility at night.
  • Use Hand Signals: Learn the necessary hand signals to communicate with other road users.
